Pierson High School Exhibit
Curated by Peter Solow
Opening with Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria: Saturday, May 7th, 6:00 - 8:00pm
Panel Discussion: Reflections on the Cuban Experience, moderated by Bryan Boyhan, Saturday, May 7th, 4:00 - 5:30pm.
This past February, twenty-six Pierson High School students visited Cuba as part of an educational tour made possible by the easing of restrictions between our two countries.
The trip introduced participating students to a country of remarkable contradictions filled with music, vibrant art, natural beauty, and warm and generous people. It is also a country of poverty, deteriorated infrastructure, and the ever-present shadow of the regime that has controlled daily life for nearly 60 years.
CUBA is a reflection of that experience.
7x Grammy nominee, Bobby Sanabria
The exhibition includes journal entries, photography and art, written and created in response to the students’ experiences in Cuba. In addition, the newly organized Pierson Afro-Cuban Percussion Band, inspired by our trip, will preform a short piece at the exhibition opening with 7x Grammy nominated drummer, Bobby Sanabria. Pierson Alumnus Rafaela Gurtler will lead the Band.
Prior to the opening on May 7th students will share their observations and reflect on their experiences in a panel discussion moderated by Bryan Boyhan. The panel will take place from 4 - 5:30pm.
All are welcome.
