Artist Statement:
Observing my father's work as an archeologist in Samos instilled in me the desire to observe and organize through cataloging systems objects, images and memories. The Greek 'Ethnos' cigarette box, was the box my father kept on the table in the museum; filled with shards of terra cotta it became a part of my organizing principles.
I am interested in the documentation and the creation of objects and artifacts that carry the memory of history and time. Through the act of re-seeing, I reassign new meaning to everyday objects.
The Whaling Museum is the perfect place to take a look at life in a specific time period through its artifacts. I am taking a look at simple objects of everyday life such as nets, strings, hard tacks and reinterpret them through systems of grids, threads, fabric and paper.
Archeology in real life becomes archeology of the mind by putting together pieces of a never-ending puzzle.
About Bastienne Schmidt:
Bastienne Schmidt is a mixed media artist working with photography, painting and large-scale drawings. She was born in Germany, raised in Greece and Italy and has lived in New York for the past 20 years.
Her art work is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the International Center of Photography, the Brooklyn Museum, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris among others. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally in over 100 exhibitions among them the International Center of Photography in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, The New Museum, The Museum fuer Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg and the Southeast Museum in Photography in Daytona Beach, Florida. She has published 6 monographs, among them Vivir la Muerte, American Dreams, Shadowhome, Home Stills, Topography of Quiet, and Typology of Women.
She is represented by the Ricco / Maresca Gallery in New York.
