Face to Face is a collection of black and white portraits of artists and writers from the East End by Sag Harbor photographer, Jonathan Morse.
The impetus for the series came from a portrait that Morse did of his old friend and fellow photographer, Paul Ickovic. The picture, included in this show, was well received, and Ickovic, in his own inimitable manner, insisted that Morse immediately cease work on his series of Landscapes, (Eye on the East End), Nudes, (Odalisque) and Seagulls, (Sag Harbor Long Wharf Luncheon and Flying Club), and concentrate entirely on a series that would celebrate the idea that one who has lived a long life of the mind, develops a depth of character that is revealed in their faces.
At the completion of the project, it became clear that more than simply presenting some interesting faces, the series chronicled an important era in the long and inseparable connection between artists and the East End.
The show will consist of some 35 portraits from a collection of 75, most of which will be illustrated in a limited edition catalog which will be available at the Museum and local bookstores.
